BELL
BOOK AND CANDLE
Directed by Roy Brooks
NODA Review
This well-known play by John Van Druten was
excellently directed by Roy Brooks and thoroughly enjoyed
by myself and a full house.
Ann Craik gave a lovely performance as Gillian Holroyd, the
witch, who, with the help of her black cat, casts a spell
to gain the love of the man upstairs. David Walker played
Anthony Henderson, the afore mentioned man, and he played
it with ability. Sheila Poole played Gillian's aunt - a
lovely, eccentric performance.
The show stealing performance has to go to Sean Duxbury as
Nicholas Holroyd. He brought the intrigue into the play and
there was always that doubt, despite the smile, that he
wasn't all he seemed to be. Vernon Roberts, as Sidney
Redditch, gave a valuable performance.
I do like to see, where possible and where called for, a
live animal, be it in Half A Sixpence, Oliver or, of
course, Annie.
Pyewacket, the black cat, is an integral part of the play
and I was glad to see that CADOS had not been reduced to
raiding the taxidermist's. Once the initial "Ah" was over,
Josh became part of the fixtures and fittings. He was
excellently trained.
Congratulations to all who had anything to do with the
production, be it sets, props, prompt.
