ON
GOLDEN POND
Directed by Kath Hurley
NODA Review
I must first congratulate set artist Barry
Hartley, the set builders and the props team, Maureen
Johnston and Gail Hilton. Their atention to detail was a
visual delight from the very opening - and, of course, the
lighting. On really felt Golden Pond was just the other
side of the window. Carrying through where the audience
could not see makes the play, or musical, even more
authentic. This production directed by Cathy Hurley was
superb. Wyn Tootell and Mike Tunstell as Ethel and Norman
Thayer acted as though they really were man and wife: their
timing was excellent. Norman's acerbic retorts and the
intimate detailsof their lives was wonderfully expressed.
Alan Dyke was a superb Charlie Martin - right down to the
lovely laugh. Gill Riches as Chelsea, also a good character
actress bringing home to the audienc ethe difficulties
beyween her and her father. Sean Duxbury as Billy Ray
brought his usual expertise tio the role. I have left the
youngest member of the cast wntil last. Robin Armstrong as
Billy Ray Jnr gave a marvellous piece of acting. Pacing his
delivery in exchanges with Norman, we were treated to some
wondeful moments between these two. This play was just
superb teahte. Well done, indeed.
