JACK
AND THE BEANSTALK
Directed by Susan Morrison
NODA Review
An updated John Morley pantomime, directed
with enthusiasm by Susan Morrison. The cast had an uphill
struggle at times coping with the heckling from one or two
members of the audience. It says a lot for their
professionalism that they were able to meet the challenge.
Brian Clarke played an excellent Dame Trott. His acting was
superb even when not in the spotlight. Barbara Wolfe as
Jack was well able to handle the noisy element of some
well-aimed ad-libs. Clare Astley was a very pretty Princess
Melanie and Andrew Staples gave a good account of himself
as Silly Billy. Ben Mayo as King Satupon entered
whole-heartedly into the spirit of the evening with David
O'Brien and Ian Hunter as sidekicks, Spick and Span,
handling more of the comedy. Barry Ashworth excelled as the
dastardly Fleshcreep with Kate Ashworth a very funny
Vegetable Fairy. Jim Stott as Blunderbore was fitted with a
wonderful giant's costumes and he projected a suitable
voice for the character. Sandra Dickinson and Jan Lewis
were exceptionally good as Daisy the Cow.
Sets and lighting completed a very enjoyable evening. I
must say I liked the way the youngsters were entertained
during the interval.
