review by Glyn Neary
This hilarious John Godber sequel charts the ups and downs
of the valiant amateurs of the Wheatsheaf Arms as they try
to muster a team to take on the might of the Cobblers Arms.
The moods and swings of the team members were well
characterised by all concerned. From the doubts expressed
in the face and body language of Arthur, very well executed
by Brian Clarke to the comedian of the 'pack' Steve,
assuredly played by Andrew Kidd, all facets of the
production were well controlled by producer Steve Unsworth.
The other members of the team were equally well played by
Danny Price, Barry Callender and Lorraine Sullivan.
Added into this mixture was the effective monotone delivery
of the reporter Ray Mason played by Nick Ainsworth and the
brilliant portrayal of Spud by Steve Unsworth.
Alan Pearson took the part of the businesslike manager of
the Cobblers Arms team, Ray Mason, whilst Debbie Leyland
played the part of Arthur's long suffering wife, Doreen.
Scenery, by the very nature of the play, left a little to
the audience's imagination. However excellent lighting by
Paul Carr enhanced the proceedings and the minimalist style
allowed the production to proceed at pace. The choreography
for the 'match' against the Cobblers Arms also worked
wonderfully well.
A victory for the Wheatsheaf Arms looked highly unlikely
but this production was a sure fire winner for the
society.
